ButoThe Egyptians knew the Delta town of Buto as Per Wadjet, "The House of Wadjet". The cobra goddess Wadjet, its local deity, was the Lower Egyptian counterpart to the vulture goddess Nekhbet of Nekhen (Hierakonpolis) in Upper Egypt. Per Wadjet was also the capital of the Sixth Lower Egyptian Nome. Given that the Delta, at least early in Egyptian history, was probably little better than a vast swamp, it is possible that Buto and some other cult centers in Lower Egypt were more religious sanctuaries than actual cities. |
